3 Reasons Why Barre Needs to Be Your Next Workout
Remember the days of aerobics back in the 80s? It was so much fun compared to today’s gym class workouts – more dance-oriented and exciting. And then there were the THT [tummy, hips and thighs] classes! I loved them all: I remember feeling spent by the time I had finished a session, and it never felt like a chore.
This is what my clients feel like after one of my Barre classes – and why I’m launching my Winter Barre Challenge this August. I want clients to feel fabulous and look forward to the next Barre class. Imagine experiencing the Barre buzz 3x a week – how amazing would that feel?
Although we don’t do too much jumping around (Barre is low impact) we still get a good workout if you keep going all class, keep trying those tough manoeuvres, and keep pushing through the burn.
Barre Is Not Simply Prancing Around!
If you think you’ve come for some elegant stretching and prancing around, think again! While graceful, Barre is certainly an intense exercise. And ballerinas – the original masterminds of Barre-style exercises – are total athletes. This workout style tones and strengthens the bum, legs and hips. I also love the fact that the feet get a good workout! They are very important seeing that you walk and stand on them all day every day.
Toning and strengthening the legs is important through all stages of life, as this brings stability to the joints and muscles. As we age, our body naturally weakens in these areas. Our bone density also lowers. So, the more we do now to strengthen our legs, the less we have to worry about in the future (hopefully). Barre helps us avoid hip or knee replacements and falling over from not being able to balance well, whether stationary or while moving. We want to live strong for our young generations and make the most of our time together.
1. Channel Your Inner Goddess
Barre is also about movement, flexibility, balance, and posture. Rediscover moving through the world with goddess-like poise and grace. With Barre, you’ll work your body to lengthen and grow, which we love in part to counter the fact that we shorten as we age!
2. Foster Mobility Techniques
Fun and fitness, technique and flow, Barre is an all-around mobility masterclass that will remind us how to get up and down in a chair correctly and safely. Barre helps us get to and from the floor optimally, without falling over or sustaining an injury.
3. Train Your Strength and Agility
Barre strengthens the glutes, the hamstrings, the quads, knees, hips, and calves. It mobilises feet, hips, spine, and shoulders. It stretches the hamstrings, adductors, lower back and spine. It opens up and frees the whole body. You will learn how to move with ease, control and strength.
The Key To Mastering Barre
Want to get the most out of your personalised Barre workout (or any workout actually)? The simple secret is to listen closely. Listen to the corrections given to you and work on precisely that – with an optimistic attitude! It might burn but it will be worth it.
As with all of my classes, there are modifications and variations to all exercises so that everyone works to their full potential.
